Chapter 6

Candy hurried inside the church, finding a seat in the front row. She motioned for Joseph to sit with her. He had been talking to a gentleman outside when she told him she was going to secure them a seat. The moment she had dashed away, he ended his conversation to catch up with her.

Joseph was a good man. He deserved so much more than he gave himself credit for. Working side by side at the ranch had made her realize how much. She knew he worried that no one would want a man with a crippled leg. Mrs. Closs had mentioned her suspicions about his feelings yesterday when Candy had helped them finish decorating the ranch house. How was she going to make him understand a weak limb does not define a man?

She did notice since she gave him a tin of salve she found in a basket last evening, his limping hadn’t seemed so bad this morning. They had parked the buggy at the livery and walked the few blocks to the church today without any trouble. He often rubbed at his thigh and she hadn’t noticed him doing so.

Another reason they had parked at the livery was because Candy wanted to walk the children through town when she took them home today. She wanted them to feel the spirit of Hope Mountain from the very start. A smile lingered on her face. Raising children was going to be a process, she was sure. Candy was up to the challenge. When she decided to adopt the children, she didn’t take the decision lightly. Joseph had upset her with his questioning words last evening.

Today, however, she was not going to try to reason with him. Last night while lying in bed, she had gone over every doubt he had. She was doing this for the children and for Eva. She understood now why Eva and Jacob had made stipulations before handing over a large ranching empire to her. They figured if she stayed a year, her heart and soul would be here.

It hadn’t taken that long to fall in love with the ranch. A week, two at the most.

She felt Joseph sit next to her. When she turned to him, a lump caught in her throat. He looked so handsome in his dark suit, with his dark locks combed back out of his eyes. Those eyes, looking at her as if she were the only person in the church that mattered. A heavy sigh escaped her. How was she ever going to resist it if he tried to kiss her again?

Now that she was going to be a mother, she’d have to set him straight about random kisses. Then she gazed at him and her knees weakened even though she was sitting down!

“Welcome, parishioners! Let’s pray.” While everyone bowed their heads, Candy felt a deep desire in her heart to make sure the children got adopted today. Even though she had doubts they would allow a woman to adopt, she was going to try her hardest to stand her ground.
